Upward Salute | Urdhva Hastasana

This is another pose that, when done well, is more challenging than it looks. Take your Mountain pose and lift your arms overhead. Use the appropriate muscles in this pose to keep the “shape,” but notice if you are engaging muscles that are not needed in this pose. Be aware of the top of shoulders, neck, and jaw. Can you relax these areas and still hold the pose?

  • Step 1 From the Mountain pose, stretch through the fingertips.
  • Step 2 Externally rotate your arms and lift them over your head, with palms facing each other. Keep your arms straight and parallel. Again, press into your feet and stretch up through your fingertips.

Things to think about

Holding this pose with intention is harder than it seems.

If your shoulders are tight, your arms can be in a wider “V.”
